Best (and worst) of May

May was - full of surprises! Before I get to them, let's take a look at the 1-second-a-day video:

As you can see, there were 2 things dominating that month: the dogs and the Little House (formerly known as the She Shed). That's because:
The good:
We got a new puppy!
Meet Teddy:

She's a girl, despite the name, which I gave her because she looks like baby Bear, which makes her ↠ Teddy Bear!

The reason why I call her a surprise is because Rich didn't tell me he would get her. This has become a ritual of our marriage over the years: Rich says he wants to buy another dog (always for me, allegedly). I always say that "we don't need another dog". We talk back and forth, until we eventually drop it; a short while later, he shows up with the new dog. I always pretend to be upset, but fall in love with the new puppy in about 0.5 seconds, which means that they inevitably do become "my" dogs. The winner in this marital dispute? Either both, or nobody - I can't decide.

The long and short of it is, we have a new puppy, who is not even 5 months old and already HUMONGOUS, and obviously we love her to bits. She hasn't killed anything yet (we think - there was one dead chicken in front of our house one morning, but we are fairly sure it was the ravens and not the puppy). She is always happy, loves to play with Nina, the Blue Heeler, doesn't run away, and is overall a delight. I'm really happy this girl joined our pack! By the way, she is a Šarplaninac, a Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog , and no, I had never heard of that breed either. Rich found her somewhere on the internet, the fact of which still impresses and amazes me. 

The Little House is DONE*!
*well, almost

I apologize for the mess in front of the Little House - it's gone now, but I still haven't gotten around to taking proper pictures of it yet. But yes, it's true: the Little House on Miller, aka the She Shed, is 99% DONE!!!!!!
  

Originally, I envisioned it to be this tiny shed where I would cram a desk and a couch in, and call it a day. But somehow, with the input of Rich and the two guys who built it for me, it turned into this glorious, beautiful, everything-I-always-imagined Little House.
I always wanted a wrap-around-porch: let's build one!
I always wanted a real wood stove: the carpenter gave me one!
I always wanted a red couch: I ordered myself one!

I always wanted a hammock to read and watch hummingbirds in: done!

It's truly spectacular. The only (teeny-tiny, self-indulged, don't-listen-to-me) downside? Two other people have already lived in the Little House, and I still haven't been able to spend any time in it.
Rose from the book (she was the lady I stayed with when I first met Rich) spent a night when it was barely finished, and the very next day, Rich's friend from Germany arrived to stay for 2 weeks. (He's sitting on the porch in the photo with the 3 dogs, a few photos up.)
It's okay. I've waited for this for such a long time, I can wait 5 more days (barely, but I'll survive. #firstworldproblems)

My goal for June is to take some decent photos and give you guys a tour!

Book stuff

Noteworthy things that happened:
1. I asked the local pharmacy (an independent, locally owned store) if they would carry my book - and they said yes. Just like that! I gave them 5 copies, and once my co-workers at the hospital got wind of it, they sold quickly. Crazy!!!! I dropped off 5 more.

2. One morning at the hospital, as I was passing by the patients waiting for lab, I saw a lady reading my.book. Right there, in *my* hospital! Most awesome/surreal experience of my life.
3. Another lady stopped at my window at work and told me excitedly: "My best friend and I are going to Hawaii together, and she's bringing your book. Her daughter says it's FANTASTIC, so I told her to summarize every chapter once she's finished it." MIND.BLOWN. The people in this town are out-of-this-world amazing.

The bad:
Flooding
For the second year in a row, the interior of BC had more than its fair share of flooding. Due to a larger snow-pack than usual, we also had more melt water, which translated into closed bridges, people being evacuated, and a few, unfortunate homes being lost. The worst is behind us now, but it's still devastating for those who lost some of their property and/or their homes.
