I'm getting myself a she shed!

source

The other day, there was a knock on the door. Lily, my corgi, was outside, and I assumed it was her wanting to come back in - she always knocks gently on the door when she does. (She's remarkably smart, obviously.)
But when I opened the door, my big, goofy dog Barney was standing there, smiling up at me.
You may remember that Barney was an unplanned dog. In his short life, he had been passed from one home to another, and ended up at our place, to be given to yet another new home. Rich, Barney and I fell in love with each other, and we decided to keep him. That was back in July, and he has been grateful to us ever since.

Anyway, Barney has figured out that to come inside the house, all you have to do is knock. So he knocked just as gently on the door with his gigantic paw as Lily does with her tiny one! (He, too is a remarkably smart dog.)
However, I couldn't let him in, because not only wouldn't he be comfortable in the warm house with his thick coat, but Rich has this silly "no-big-dogs-in-the-house"-rule.
Barney tried a few more times, but then he got it and gave up.

Here's the thing: I've always wanted to have a house where I can hang out with all my dogs. But having a great number of dogs, with an even greater amount of fur, plus a fairly small house, just doesn't make for a happy ending. The house would smell like a dog kennel in no time, and I'm worried that the extreme temperature difference between inside and outside during the winter would mess up their resilience to our chilly winter temperatures.

Long story short: I thought I'd have to accept to only have Lily (and occasionally Tom Snow) in the house.
But a few days ago, it hit me: I could get myself a she shed!
In case you haven't heard of she sheds, they are the female equivalent to the man cave, but cuter and with less beer farts. I can't remember when I first heard about them, or why I didn't think of it sooner, but who cares - I'm getting one now!

Richard promised to build me one in the spring, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it! It will be my place to write (it's within Wi-Fi range, obviously), read, and hang with all the dogs. I told Barney, and him and I are very excited.
Since I'm fascinated with tiny houses, I want mine to be more of a small house than a shed. I'm envisioning a cross between a gingerbread house from a fairy tale and a Wild West saloon.
It most definitely needs a porch and flower boxes in front of the windows:

I love those red, barn-style swing doors (and the awesome light fixtures, and flower baskets):

There will be fairy lights everywhere ...

... maybe a swing chair ...
... and I can't rule out a chandelier (or two).

Happy weekend!

  1. So cool!! Your she shed is going to be awesome.

And how clever Barney is! It must have been so hard to resist letting him in after he was so sweet and smart to show off that he understood knocking.

    1. Omg, yes. He's just so darn cute and hopeful, I want nothing more than to have him in the house with me!
The good thing is that he doesn't get upset, he just lies down in front of the door, or plays with the other dogs. It's high time for me to take some more photos of him and dedicate an entire post to him, he deserves it!

  2. This is so awesome!1 I think I am just as excited for you to get this so I can see it too!
My niece and nephew have a play house shed at my mother-in-law's house. They build a loft for a thin pad and throw pillows and built in corner shelves, kid size table and chairs (with seat cushions). The table has a vase with flowers and a table runner/place mats with a matching area rug. At Christmas she puts in a live tree all decorated and lights on the roof as well. We think it is really more for her then the kids. It is really cute.

    1. That sounds so lovely! I'm thinking of all white walls, a red-and-white plaid sofa, a cute little wood-burning potbelly stove, and pretty lace curtains. I'm also gonna decorate it for Christmas, with a small real tree!
I sometimes wake up at night because I had a dream about it. It will be so great!
