Why you need a mission statement for your life

Do you have a vision for your life? A picture in your head of what your dream life looks like? If not, you need to. Every decision you make, the habits you form and the actions you take should lead you towards the life you want to live. That's where a mission statement comes in. Every company has one, and so should you. Mission statements are like the beacon of light you follow towards creating your best life, designed to help you make decisions and figuring out your path.
Here is my mission statement:

I am completely at peace every day.
I work 3-4 days a week at the hospital. I write insightful articles and books about living your best and wildest life. My books are well-received and help people.
I spend quality time with my husband every day.
I have healthy, loving relationships with friends and family.
I have more money than I need, I invest and save wisely, and I keep my living expenses low.
I move my body every day, feed it good food and deny myself nothing.
I am strong and healthy.
I am leaving a positive impact on the world around me, and I love and enjoy this life I have created every single day.

These are my personal guiding principles. If I have a decision to make I look at my mission statement to see if it will bring me closer towards my goals or further away.
It's been more helpful than I expected it to be.
It encouraged me to distance myself from the high-maintenance friend who loves drama, because being around her threatens my peace.
It helped me make the decision to move back home in September, because spending time with my husband is more important to me than making lots of money.
It reminds me of what's important to me and what I need to do in order to be happy and fulfilled.

Your life mission statement is the theme of your life. It will help you become the person you want to be and create the life you want to live.

Before you sit down to write your own mission statement, ask yourself these questions:
  • How do you want to feel? Stimulated, calm, fired up, peaceful, excited?
  • What's important to you? Travel, creating a beautiful home, making lots of money, having lots of free time?
  • What kind of person do you want to be? Confident, put together, independent, free-spirited, grounded, poised, crunchy, wild?
  • What do you want to be remembered for? Helping others, baking great pies, creating art, rescuing animals, being a wonderful mother, being generous, being brave?
  • What would you regret not having done were you to die tomorrow? Writing the book, going to Australia, making up with your estranged father, putting on a bathing suit and going swimming in wild lakes, letting yourself live your life despite what others say?
Your mission statement is the vision that becomes your reality when you act according to your values.
Mahatma Ghandi said:
Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.
You can choose your own destiny! There is nothing more empowering than that.

Be brave, be true to yourself, and create your very best life.
