What I will remember about our first desert summer

What I will always remember of this first summer is the hot wind. Windows open for 3 months straight. The fine layer of dust covering everything in the house, no matter how often I clean (which isn't very often).
Feet dirty and dusty. Matching husband and wife Birkenstock-tans from our identical Birkenstocks.

I will remember experiencing temperatures over 40͒ C for the first time in my life. The dogs stretched out in the shade during the hottest time of the day, coming to life in the morning and at night, chasing each other through the sand exuberantly, leaving huge clouds of dust in their wake.

I will remember building all the things: Fences, sheds, barns, more sheds. More fences. And always quitting work at 2 pm because of the heat 😎

I will remember planting sunflower seeds in June, and having sunflowers taller than me in August.

I will remember the blue sky.

And the smoky one.

I will remember this as the summer where I discovered my inner cowgirl.

I will remember this as the summer of people: Numerous houses guests, making new friends, having people spontaneously drop in.

I will remember how we went tubing down the river (and almost froze to death).

I will remember it as the summer of ALL.THE.NEW.ANIMALS: Adopting Barney, buying a heard of mini cows, trading bunnies for horses and getting a stallion for free

I will remember this as the summer when I finished my baby

But what I will most remember is that this was the summer where I found my place in the world. Not only a piece of land with a pretty view, but a community. A place where people are kind-hearted and friendly, where we were welcomed with open arms. A place where we fit in like into a favourite pair of worn boots. They fit. We fit.

And for the first time in my life, I truly belong.

I will always remember this summer as the summer I came home.

xoxo Miriam

  4. You've had an awesome summer! Poor Bear in that 40 degree C heat - I bet he's ready for cooler weather.

So awesome that you feel like you've found your home and your community.

    1. You know, he handled the heat surprisingly well. We believe that his coat insulated him against the heat just as well as it does against the cold in the winter. Still, he's loving the cooler nights we're getting now!
