Can we have it all?

Do you remember that episode of  "Sex and the City" where Samantha has a party in her new apartment in the meatpacking district? She gaily pours the champagne, just loving life, and she keeps saying: "Ladies, we have it all! Great apartments, careers, sex, friends, money." [I'm paraphrasing, can't remember the exact words she used.]
But I vividly remember her leaning out of the window, in her beautiful, no-doubt-designer-and-very-expensive dress, yelling out to New York: "WE HAVE IT ALL, NEW YORK!!"

A couple of days later she is sick in her bed, unable to draw the curtains because they crashed down, and she can't get anybody to fix them for her. And she realizes: No, we don't have it all.

Aah, SATC. You may say what you want about that show, but it was very entertaining. I personally also think it was beautifully written, and it does have its little moments of wisdom.

That's what's currently happening in my life: I can't fit it all in. I'm on a real reading kick (reading books, that is), but it interferes with my blog reading/commenting.
We are going on vacation next week (yay!!!), and I haven't even properly researched it.

Working day shifts all week (like a regular person) is cramping my style as well: That whole getting-up-early nonsense is messing with my writing mojo! (I got up at 5:30 am today, just to be able to write this post. What is this craziness?)
And playing-with-Lily mojo! How do you people do it day after day, week after week? You all have my deepest respect! I feel like I get nothing done after work.

Exercising is all but a distant memory - ain't nobody got time for that, and it is way too hot anyway.
But my body misses it, no denying that.

How to fit it all in? Work, play, husband, dogs, friends, hobbies, house cleaning, leg shaving, grocery shopping, writing, cooking, photographing, walking, sweeping the deck (it looks quite messy), birthday gift buying - and there are about 20 more things I'm forgetting right now.

You can't. As Samantha realized, we can't have it all.

I guess all we can do is compromise. Go with the flow. Sacrifice one thing in favour of another, hoping to have made the right choice.

I want to apologize for neglecting my blog friends - sorry for not commenting and getting back to your lovely comments as soon as I would like!

To Lily: Sorry for not playing with you 5.7 hours every day right now. Soon, I promise!

Now I have to wrap this up, otherwise I will be late for work. Day shift, I tell ya!

  1. Lilly is just so cute! Your trip to Alaska is coming up!!! Yes, I often wonder how some people seem to get so much done! I'm actually scared to see how unproductive I am without a job (as it seems like I should have so much time to do things but I know that will most likely not be the reality) :) Good luck getting it all done!

    1. It can't come soon enough! Last night I met with a friend, and when she asked me where our stops are (we go on an Alaskan cuise), I couldn't remember! Yikes, I felt like such a dumdum.

Thanks for your sweet encouragement! You are right, the mess and dirt won't go anywhere - I have tried before. ;-)

  3. Oh gosh yes. I totally remember that episode (I watched the series 8 times!!! My dvds are in rough shape).

I so enjoyed this post. It's so true. We can't/don't have it all. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. You are as bad as me when it comes to SATC! I don't own the DVDs, but I will watch any rerun I happen to catch. Just love that show!
Yes, the last couple of weeks have felt way more hectic than normal, maybe because I have such a long list of things I want to do every day. Note to self: Can't do it all! The mess won't go anywhere, can clean it up another day.

  4. I feel you. It can be hard to have it all. Most people can't. Between working, pets, writing/blogging, and so on.
I'm sure Lily understands. She will be very happy when she gets to spend more time with you.
Have fun on your Vacation next week!

I nominated you for a Liebster Award on my Blog

  5. I love that episode. Shoot, I love that show. E! has been re-running them like crazy and I love it. One of my sweet cats passed away yesterday so I skipped out on work. After taking care of some of the things that needed to be taken care of, I plopped myself down in front of three straight hours of Sex and the City. The cat-kid and I used to watch it together, so it felt quite appropriate. Bittersweet.

  6. "Having it all" is a term I have never really understood, I must admit. I don't think contentment is contingent upon it. In fact, I think the opposite. I know what you mean about not having time for everything (I am on a big reading kick, too!), and neglecting certain things in your life. It is hard. And if I ever do feel like I have come up with the right balance, I get sick or something else throws me off, like Samantha. :)
