School of Life v.6: Minimalism, Schminimalism

Hi fellow Sunday schoolers!
This post is brought to you from my cellphone/the library, since my internet is down.

Lesson 1: I'm addicted to the internet, and I'm fine with that.

I have been in a bad mood since it happened two days ago. After work tonight I will have to call Shaw for them to hopefully fix it - I'm looking forward to this call about as much as I do to a root canal.
I hate phone calls; I'm not good at them. Plus I always feel like an idiot when it comes to computer stuff. I don't know which box is the router and which one is the modem; there are about a million black cords all tangled up behind the desk, so when they tell me to "unplug cable A and plug in cable B", it's close to impossible. I always hope that they can just fix it from their end, but they never can.
You know how some people have cleaning ladies, personal trainers or their own chefs?
I want personal tech support. Anybody interested?

Lesson 2: A little shopping trip is all a girl needs sometimes.

Generally, I like the less is more philosophy. Living a simple life and all that jazz. But you know what? Once in a while, retail therapy is just what the doctor ordered.
Friday was pay day (yay!), I had the day off, and no internet. Not being able to spend hours upon hours surfing the net, blogging, and watching the last two episodes of Orange is the new Black left me with an unexpected amount of free time. So I did what any self-respecting girl would do: hopped in my car and across the border to do a little shopping in Bellingham.
Ah, it was blissful! Three unexpected things happened that confirmed that the decision had been a good one:
1. H&M opened the day before, and you got $10 off your purchase.
2. I found the perfect bathing suit (see above): it's a desert print with horses, cacti, and that lovely red rock that you find in Arizona and Utah. Arches National Park is one of my absolute favourite places on earth, so this suit really called out to me! I would have bought it no matter the price, but
3. There was a one(!)-day sale on swim wear! This was seredipity in action, no doubt about it.

Lesson 3: Bangs are awesome.
Since last week was sort of odd, I was tempted to cut my hair again. That's my default coping mechanism: If something bothers me, instead of dealing with it directly, I first employ a host of distraction techniques. Shopping (check), drinking wine (check), exercising (does walking and slinging horse manure around count?), cutting my hair. After perusing Pinterest for a few happy hours, I was almost ready to get this cut:

However, I have been trying to grow my hair out for almost 2 years now, and would have regretted it bitterly. Damn you Pinterest and your pretty pictures! Thankfully, Rich and my hairstylist-daughter did an intervention and persuaded me not to go ahead. Instead, I got bangs again.
I'm super happy with them for three five (more than I thought!) reasons:
1. They hide my forehead lines.
2. They cover my weird hair line (it's sort of receding).
3. They make me look younger (I hope).
4. People complimented me on my hair.
5. It makes my round face look less round (I hope).

Lesson 4: Blog it out.
Since I've exhausted all my distraction techniques, I will now have to deal with the problem I've been struggling with. It's been a long time coming, and I hope that once I have written it all down, I will feel better. Maybe some of you have had similar issues to deal with? Or you are going through it right now, and we can commiserate?
It deserves a post all on its own, so look out for it in the next few days. Or don't, if you don't want to read something down and heavy.

Anywho, my time is running out (did you know that there is a time limit on library computers?), and I still don't know how to insert pictures and the linkup-link.
Maybe my internet will be back magically tonight. It is possible, right? (Yeah, right. I don't belive it either).

Update: I am sitting on my computer again (hallelujah!), we managed to bypass the router and get the connection back. I will have to call the Linksys people later to get them to fix the router. But I hold off on that for a few hours, need to catch up on all my blog reading first!

Love, Miriam

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!!

  4. I HATE technical difficulties. I would also like my own tech guy and an editor, since we are wishing for assistants :) Glad to see your post, so yay!! I'm sorry you are struggling, I hope it will be better soon and as S said I'm here if you need to vent or whatever ;) I think the first picture comes off more sexy librarian than annoyed :)

  6. I give myself bangs every now and then. I am in the process of frowning them out again.
Cute bathing suit! I am due for an H&M run. I haven't been there in a while!
I am glad you figured out your internet issue. I hate when that happens.
I am sorry you have a heavy heart about something. I hope you work it out - hugs :)

  7. One day a few years ago I thought I should label all the cables that fall behind the desk and end up in a tangled mess that kind of looks like a poorly constructed birds nest. That was a good idea that worked. As for bangs, I've always had them and probably always will even though I don't have forehead lines. It's genetic. Bathing suits? Those I don't do because of leg wrinkles and vericose veins- my Achilles heel. Everyone has one, right?
