Unfunny people

Currently, I find myself in a peculiar situation. I spend the majority of each day with people who are - different. Almost like another species. I look at them, head slightly cocked, trying to figure out  what exactly it is about them that makes them seem so unusual.
Well, the other day it hit me. They don't have a sense of humour! Or, to be more precise: they don't seem to find me or my husband funny. But, particularly, me.

I know, I'm as baffled as you are. Here is the thing you may not know about me, but have to understand to grasp the depth of my bewilderment and confusion: I think I am pretty funny. It is important to me to be funny. Humour is the most important ingredient in our marriage, and the quality I look for most in other people. If you are not funny, you can't be my friend. The friends I have I find incredibly hilarious, and laughing with them is one of the best things in the world for me.

So this, this- aberration is hard for me to deal with. Why are they the way they are? And, more importantly: Why don't they laugh at my witty remarks??

Everybody's humour, of course, is a very subjective matter. What some people find hysterical, others just shake their heads at. I get that. But so far, I have yet to figure out what exactly it is that they can laugh about. Self-deprecating jokes, while usually popular in our house, have been met with blank stares. The permanent classics about our ages (we have a 25-year age gap, and like to make fun of our respective ancient/immature stages in life) only got us uneasy glances, and my hurried assurances that "we are just joking!"

I would never make fun of other people (unless they are friends, we know each other very well and share a similar sense of humour), but if Rich and I make fun of ourselves and laugh about it, why don't they share our amusement? It is mind-boggling. And makes conversation a bit stilted.
I like to make light of a lot of things, and don't take life too seriously. Without that, I find sitting around and talking somewhat -  well, boring actually. Nice, but blah. It's a real pickle.

But I'm not giving up that easy. I will find out what makes them laugh, I will!
Oh, I actually do remember something. It's that weird joke Rich likes to tell, and he did get a smile as a reaction.

Here it is:

"A plumber gets a phone call in the middle of the night from his doctor. 'You have to come to my house immediately, the entire basement is flooded!' the doctor tells him desperately. The plumber gets out of bed and drives over to the doctor's house. He looks at the damage, gets out some plugs and sealant, and throws them into the basement. 'Call me when it is better!'"

Go figure.

How important is humour for you? Do you find the plumber joke as lame as I do?

  2. "If you are not funny, you can't be my friend." DITTO! I just don't understand why you wouldn't want to laugh! It's fun, dammit!

  3. I wish I was more funny. My mind just doesn't work that way though.

One of the reasons I read your blog is because you are quite funny :) That and your blog design is really cute.

    1. Aww thanks, that's so nice of you! I know not everybody can be funny, but having a sense of humour makes life so much easier. How else can you get through everyday life without going crazy? ;-)

  4. I agree most of my friends make me laugh and are pretty funny people. So, I don't really get people that do not seem to have a sense of humor. I try to be funny. Although, I can't say I've mastered the skill. But, at least I have a sense of humor.

  5. Sense of humor is a funny (pun?) thing. It is so interesting that our minds process jokes differently, completely changing the reaction based on the person. Sense of humor is important to me in friends for sure! I'm not necessarily looking for a class clown kind of personality when it comes to friends, but someone who can recognize when I'm joking is really key. Kevin and I have similar sense of humor so that works out really well. I'm glad you and Rich do as well! It just makes marriage fun when someone laughs at the same things you do!

  6. Yes, Yes...I love people who have a sense of humor. I actually find it super uncomfortable in social settings for people to be too serious...it make me uneasy.

  7. This is something I have a really hard time with in Sweden. In America and England I am funny in Sweden I am sooooo unfunny and am often met with blank stares and awkwardness. Fredrik however is funny in English and Swedish which he is so proud of but sometimes makes him get some serious side eye from me.
