What Richard knows

It's day 3 of Blogtember. Today's food for thought is this:
Pass on some useful advice or information you learned and always remembered.

My first reaction when I read this was: "Uhm, no idea, darn, I have nothing to say today."
But, about 5 minutes later, something did pop in my head!

It's actually something my wise and experienced husband has taught me.
In case you are new around here, there is something you should know: My hubby is older than me. Way older. 25 years to be exact.

It's not a gold-digger/trophy-wife scenario; it's a we-both-fell-in-love-with-each-other-despite-the-age-difference scenario .
We have been together 11 years and he's my most favourite person in the world.
But I digress.
How did I end up here?

Anyways. One of the many advantages of living with someone older (and there are quite a few, believe me) is that he already experienced most of the crises and rites of passage that I still have to navigate myself.

And he can teach me how to best do it. One of the most valuable things I have learned?
He said it.

And it's true!
Like all most women, I'm a worrywart. And when I was a bit younger I was downright neurotic.
When things were going well I was suspicious; what is the price I will have to pay?
I reveled in worrying about the future, seeing problems where there really weren't any.

Richard also always says: "About 90% of all problems resolve themselves."
What a foreign concept! Wait and see? How unfemale! I want to talk and talk and talk about it, and then talk some more. Create all these different scenarios, and try to find hypothetical solutions.

But, since my approach was quite stressful and didn't work for me, I tried his. And oh my lord, he's right.
Of course, you can't just be passive and ignore real problems; but worrying about all that stuff that may or may not happen in the future really doesn't help anybody.

So now I'm working on being more like him: Wait and see. If the problem still exists, then I will try to solve it.
But, most of the time, after a while - it's simply gone.

  2. That is really genius, as all week I have being doing the womanly way and thinking of all the things that could go wrong at the party we were going to on Friday and now it has been cancelled so all that worrying was really for nothing!

  3. how funny is it that we tend to stress the most over the things we can't control?
    because that's what we do!

  4. This reminds me a lot of this post I read earlier - http://www.annetheadventurer.com/2013/09/foreboding-joy-and-practicing-gratitude.html.

I love this message. Worry resolves nothing.
